World Bicycle Day has been celebrated since 2018 in order to draw attention to this means of transport and highlight the advantages of its use:
• cycling has a positive effect on the driver's health,
• saves money compared to other means of transport,
• in places where there are bicycle paths, it makes it easier to move through traffic jams,
• there is no parking problem for cyclists;
• has a positive effect on the environment because cycling does not pollute nature.
UN General Assembly declared June 3 as International Bicycle Day, and its resolution recognizes the bicycle as "a simple, reliable, affordable and, above all, ecological means of transportation." At the same time, it was pointed out that the bicycle "is a symbol of sustainable transport and conveys a positive message to encourage sustainable consumption and production and has a positive impact on the climate.“
The importance of cycling in everyday life was also recognized by the Institute for Standardization of Serbia, and these are the standards in cycling:
Urban and recreational bicycles, youth, mountain and racing bicycles have high safety and performance requirements for the design, assembly and testing of bicycles and subassemblies and sets guidelines for the manufacturer's instructions on the use and disassembly of such bicycles. For example, the SRPS EN ISO 4210-2:2023 standard applies to youth bicycles with a maximum seat height of 635 mm or more and less than 750 mm, city and trekking bicycles, mountain bicycles and racing bicycles that have a maximum seat height of 635 mm or more, including folding bikes. The document SRPS CEN/TR 17112:2017 refers to the composite materials used for bicycles, as well as their testing, and the standard SRPS EN 1078:2013, Helmets for pedal cyclists and for users of skateboards and roller skates, establishes the requirements and test methods for helmets, as and the requirements and appropriate test methods for structures, including field of view, impact absorption properties, puncture resistance, marking, etc.
Since the bicycle is also an ecological vehicle, it should be noted that there are numerous standards in this important area as well.
