New version of standard ISO 15189:2022 to improve quality of services and competence of medical laboratories
The internationally recognized standard ISO 15189:2022 has been revized to improve the quality and competence of medical laboratory services. This standard aims to ensure the reliability, accuracy, and clinical relevance of laboratory results—key factors for the timely and accurate diagnosis of diseases.
The previous version of this standard, ISO 15189:2012, ceased to be valid on December 5th of this year, marking the official end of the transition period during which medical laboratories accredited under the old version moved to accreditation under the new version of the standard, ISO 15189:2022.
The Institute for Standardization of Serbia has prepared a two-day training course that provides a detailed interpretation of the requirements of the revised standard.
Possessing accreditation—that is, recognition and verification that an organization meets explicitly defined standards—is a sign of confidence in the results obtained. These results are comparable to those from laboratories abroad, thereby establishing the fundamental mechanism for quality control in medical laboratory testing.
By having accreditation in accordance with the aforementioned standard, medical laboratories gain greater patient confidence and strengthen their own credibility, which makes them more competitive in the medical services market.
Although it can be said that the importance of applying the ISO 15189 standard is largely recognized in Serbia, the number of medical laboratories accredited according to the standard SRPS EN ISO 15189:2023, Medical laboratories – Requirements for quality and competence, has not changed for years.
It is for this very reason that the Institute for Standardization of Serbia has prepared a two-day training course during which the requirements of the revised standard will be interpreted in detail.
The training, titled: “Interpretation of the requirements of the standard for medical laboratories SRPS EN ISO 15189:2023 and recommendations for its application,” will be held in person on January 14 and 15, 2026, in the premises of the Institute for Standardization of Serbia in Belgrade.
Long-standing assessors and technical experts for the standard SRPS EN ISO 15189:2023, and proven experts in their respective medical fields, will share their valuable practical experience in addition to theoretical knowledge with the training participants.
