Every year on 15 March, the consumer movement around the world celebrates World Consumer Rights Day as a means of raising global awareness about consumer rights and needs. This date is an opportunity to demand respect and protection for the rights of all consumers, as well as to protest against market abuse and social injustices that violate those rights.
World Consumer Rights Day is globally accepted with the support of the United Nations and other international actors. Since 1983, a specific current topic has been highlighted each year in order to implement global actions on important issues affecting consumers.
This year's theme is "Fair and Responsible Artificial Intelligence for Consumers."
In the past year, artificial intelligence has begun to gain prominence, especially in the digital world. Thanks to the emergence of chatbots that mimic human speech, millions of consumers already use artificial intelligence in their daily lives. This technology will have a huge impact on the way we work, create, communicate, and collect information.
If used correctly, AI could improve consumer care and legal protection. However, it will also have serious consequences for consumer safety and digital fairness. Given that development is happening at a breakneck pace, a quick response is needed to ensure a fair and responsible future for artificial intelligence.
World Consumer Rights Day this year focuses on issues such as disinformation, privacy violations, and discrimination, as well as the dangers that AI poses in the spread of misinformation and its accessibility.
In the field of artificial intelligence, a large number of standards are being adopted at the international and European level, which ISS adopts in the national standardization system.
