28 January – Data Protection Day

The right to protection of personal data is a fundamental human right and freedom, enshrined in Article 8 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (1950). Further solidifying this right, the Council of Europe adopted the Convention on the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Automatic Processing of Personal Data on 28 January, 1981. This date is now celebrated as Data Protection Day, raising public awareness and promoting best practices for safeguarding personal data.

The European Union takes data privacy seriously, implementing robust regulations to safeguard personal information. The cornerstone of this framework is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), introduced in 2018. This regulation isn't just for EU members; it applies to any organization, regardless of location, that handles personal data of EU citizens. Recognizing the importance of data privacy, the Republic of Serbia took proactive steps to align its legislation with the GDPR. In January 2019, they adopted the Law on the Protection of Personal Data. This law, implemented in August 2019, outlines clear guidelines for data handling and processing, including mandatory appointment of data protection officers in certain situations.

ISS is organizing a seminar on the topic of data protection and legislation in this area, which is intended for persons in charge of personal data protection, as well as managers and everyone who deals with human resources and management systems (especially information quality and security).

Data protection and privacy aren't just buzzwords – they're essential in today's digital world. But navigating complex regulations and implementing effective measures can be daunting. That's where the ISS seminar steps in, equiping you with the most powerful tools in your data protection arsenal: international standards.
