To improve health and safety, a new standard SRPS EN 17487:2025 has been published, which defines the requirements for clothing intended for protection against bites from ticks (Ixodes ricinus) – the most widespread species in Europe and the main vector of serious diseases.
Clothing items covered by this standard include the torso, arms, and legs, and are additionally treated with permethrin, a biocidal substance that is industrially incorporated into the fabric, fibers, or yarn. In this way, the clothing not only provides a physical barrier, but also actively repels and eliminates ticks that come into contact with it. The document clearly defines the criteria for the effectiveness, durability, and safety of the treatment, as well as the importance of proper maintenance to preserve the protective function of the clothing.
This document represents a significant step forward in the prevention of tick-borne diseases, with applications in both public health and occupational safety and health, especially in professions with increased exposure to natural tick habitats.
