Standards ensure holiday joys are safe and magical

The holiday spirit is in full swing. Homes are decorated, and treats and festive delicacies will soon be ready for the holiday table. However, this well-known New Year’s magic is draped in an invisible cloak – standards. They are the key to ensuring these festive days remain joyful and safe for everyone!

Holiday delicacies

From chocolates to cakes, food safety is essential year-round, but especially during the holidays when food is frequently shared and gifted. Series of standards such as EN 1186 and EN 13130 ensure that food-contact materials do not pose a health risk, while EN 15593 sets hygiene requirements for food packaging. These standards guarantee that your Christmas sweets are not only tasty but also safely and hygienically packaged.

Food safety is further maintained by SRPS EN 17855:2024 (Foodstuffs - Minimum performance requirements for quantitative measurement of the food allergens milk, egg, peanut, hazelnut, almond, walnut, cashew, pecan nut, brazil nut, pistachio nut, macadamia nut, wheat, lupine, sesame, mustard, soy, celery, fish, molluscs and crustaceans) and SRPS EN ISO 22000:2018 (Food safety management systems).

Toys under the tree

While children focus on receiving toys, parents focus on safety. Standards play a crucial role here, specifically the SRPS EN 71 series (Safety of toys) and ISO 8124 (Safety of toys).

The SRPS EN 71 series covers key safety aspects including mechanical and physical properties, flammability, and chemical composition. For battery-operated toys, the SRPS EN IEC 62115 standard sets essential electrical safety requirements. By reducing risks such as choking, burns, or exposure to harmful substances, these standards help protect children and provide parents with peace of mind throughout the season.

Food packaging – Safe and sustainable

The holidays bring an influx of packaging waste: gift boxes, wrapping paper, ribbons, and shipping materials. This is why standards addressing sustainability and environmental impact are so vital. The ISO 22002 series (Prerequisite programs on food safety) and European standards like SRPS EN 13427 (Packaging - Specification for tensional strapping for lifting, lashing and securing of loads) and SRPS EN 13429 (Packaging – Reuse) focus on the post-use environmental impact, requiring packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or biodegradable.

The magic of holiday lights

Festive decorations are essential for a cozy atmosphere. While fairy lights and lanterns create the magic, standards ensure everything functions safely. The SRPS EN 60598 series defines safety requirements for luminaires, reducing the risk of electric shocks and short circuits. Meanwhile, SRPS EN 62471 covers the photobiological safety of lamps, protecting users from biological effects such as infrared radiation, ultraviolet radiation, and thermal retinal injuries.

The sound of the holidays and safe fireworks

No celebration is complete without high-quality sound. Standards like the SRPS EN 61094 series for measurement microphones and SRPS EN IEC 60268 for sound system equipment take care of the audio experience.

Fireworks, the traditional symbol of New Year’s Eve, hold a special place. Their safe use is governed by the SRPS EN 16261 series (Pyrotechnic articles).

Adults – parents, grandparents, and caregivers – are the creators of holiday magic, but standards are its silent heroes. They protect consumers, support sustainability, and ensure that products, from sweets to Christmas lights, meet the highest safety and quality requirements.

So, the next time you unwrap a gift or turn on the holiday lights, remember that standards are what help make every holiday safe, joyful, and truly magical.
