World Metrology Day

World Metrology Day is being observed worldwide today in commemoration of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875. This historic agreement laid the foundation for the global measurement system that today supports science, industry, international trade, and environmental protection.

This year’s theme, “Metrology: Building Trust in Public Policy”, highlights the importance of reliable measurements for transparent and accountable public decision-making. Scientific and legal metrology play a vital role in protecting consumers, ensuring fair trade, and enabling accurate measurement of energy resources, thereby strengthening public trust in institutions.

Through the cooperation of national laboratories with international organizations such as the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), global harmonization and international acceptance of measuring instruments are ensured worldwide. This day, which was officially recognized by UNESCO in 2023, also represents an opportunity to acknowledge all experts whose work contributes to building a better world through science and reliable data.
