World Metrology Day - We measure today for a sustainable tomorrow

May 20th, World Metrology Day, marks the anniversary of the signing of the Meter Convention in 1875. The Meter Convention provides the foundation for a coherent system of measurement worldwide that supports scientific discovery and innovation, industrial production and international trade, as well as the improvement of the quality of life and the protection of the environment at the global level.

This year, World Metrology Day is celebrated under the slogan “We measure today for a sustainable tomorrow”. Sustainability, as the theme of World Metrology Day 2024, has been chosen because of its importance for the various measurement capabilities that are key to nurturing a sustainable global economy and environment. The best examples of this are the measurement of energy consumption in industry, construction and transport, the management of resources in agriculture and forestry, the identification of sources of pollution, the measurement of vehicle exhaust emissions and fuel consumption, and the like.

National metrology institutes around the world are continuously improving the science of measurement by developing and validating new measurement techniques. National metrology institutes participate in interlaboratory comparisons coordinated by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) or regional metrology organizations to ensure the reliability of measurement results worldwide.

The Institute for Standardization of Serbia has many years of successful cooperation with the Directorate for Measures and Precious Metals, as standards are an integral part of metrology. On this occasion, we congratulate them on World Metrology Day.
