World Metrology Day is an annual celebration of the signature of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875. The Convention set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal applications.
This year's slogan for World Metrology Day is: "Measurements support the global food system", drawing attention to the global challenges of climate change and food distribution. The influence of metrology on the global food system is present in measuring the amount of food bought and sold, measuring the temperature and humidity of the storage space, measuring its chemical composition, as well as measuring the presence of chemical contamination. This ensures precise determination of the mass, that is, the volume of food, its efficient storage and packaging, determination of quality and ensuring safety for people's health and life. Numerous international standards provide guidelines that support the international system of measurement units.
Our country acceded to the Meter Convention in 1878, and today the national metrology institution of the Republic of Serbia is the Directorate for Measures and Precious Metals. The Directorate is a member of the Meter Convention and other international metrological organizations, and in Serbia it is a part of the quality infrastructure, together with the Accreditation Body of Serbia and the Institute for Standardization of Serbia.
