20 May - World Metrology Day

World Metrology Day is celebrated globally on 20 May, as the reminder of the day of the signing of the Meter Convention, in 1875. This convention was established by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), with the task of providing a unified system of measurement, which contributed to the development of science, innovation, industrial production and international trade.

The theme of this year´s World Metrology Day is “Measurement of Health”, and its aim is to recognize the life-saving importance of measurement when it comes to health. This is of particular importance during the pandemic, due to the need for mass testing for the presence of the virus, the establishment of a system for testing personal protective masks and respirators, as well as measuring the effectiveness of the vaccine.

International Standards provide agreed definitions and methods of measurement. The ISO 80000 series of standards for quantities and units is a vital element of the SI brochure as it provides harmonized terms, definitions and symbols of quantities and units used in science and engineering, providing a unified language for communicating accurate measurement information between scientists, engineers and anyone involved in measurement. Also, SRPS EN ISO 11240, is a key standard as it ensures that terms and identifiers used to represent units of measurement are mapped in a standardized way to the underlying metrological concepts
