World Environment Day is marked on 5 June with the aim of raising global awareness of environmental problems and appealing for a more responsible attitude towards the environment. This day was determined by the United Nations General Assembly, because on 5 June, 1972, the Conference on Environmental Protection was held in Stockholm. The message of this year´s World Environment Day is “Reimagine. Recreate. Restore”.
Almost half a century after the Stockholm Conference, the United Nations announced the beginning of the Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). A global movement called Generation of Renewal was founded, which brings together individuals, groups, companies, governmental and non-governmental organizations from around the world. On that occasion, a manual for ecosystem restoration was published, which contains practical advice for taking concrete actions.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed a number of different standards that contribute to three key dimensions of sustainable development - economic, "environmental" and social. ISS NTC A207, Environmental Management is following up on the work of the relevant international technical committee ISO/TC 207 and the European TC CEN/SS S26. The series of standards, which deals with environmental management systems - ISO 14000 - attracts special attention, both nationally and internationally, primarily because of the importance of environmental issues for organizations, their environment and the wider community. At the international level, the ISO 14000 series includes standards that address issues such as product life cycle analysis, "eco-labeling", environmental impact assessment, but also greenhouse gas and carbon footprint issues. Current and future focus of ISO/TC 207 is directed to the development of standards related to climate change and life cycle assessment. This year, a new European Technical Committee CEN/TC 467, Climate Change, was formed, where ISS registered its representative as an expert.
World Environment Day will also be marked in our country, as part of the European Green Week event. An online conference on this topic will be organized by the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
