International Plastic Bag Free Day

Plastic is all around us and has been in regular use in all households for years, and as its most common product, plastic bags are present, which have a negative impact on the entire living world. Plastic is one of the most commonly used materials, and its production and use has been greater in recent years than in the entire previous century.

As plastic waste makes up more than 10% of the total waste used daily and accumulates in large quantities in the seas and oceans, it also represents a global problem. It takes several hundred years for plastic bags to decompose in nature. This process is followed by the release of microplastics, which are retained in living organisms, which is dangerous for living beings and human health.

Although sometimes not visible, plastic waste is found in marine organisms that we consume, and in this way it has a negative impact on human health. Therefore, in recent years, there has been an appeal to all individuals to eliminate plastic bags from everyday use. It is estimated that 50% of these bags are intended for single use, and that is one more reason to give up their use.

The appeal at the global level is also realized by adopting numerous standards, both those related to the circular economy and waste management, and those related to the environmental management system.

Among them, the following standards stand out:

In addition to adopting standards and numerous regulations on the use of plastic bags, it is also important to raise awareness among each individual about the harmful effects of using plastic bags. The 3 July as the International Plastic Bag Free Day has precisely this role.
