Draft Standard naSRPS EN ISO 45001 Open for enquiry until 16 August

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has launched a new phase in the revision of ISO 45001 by releasing the ISO/DIS 45001 draft standard for enquiry. This marks one of the key stages in the process of updating the global standard for occupational health and safety management systems.

The current edition, ISO 45001:2018, remains in force; however, the DIS version indicates the direction of the forthcoming revision, which is expected to be completed with the publication of a new edition of the standard during 2027.

The Institute for Standardization of Serbia (ISS) has adopted the draft as naSRPS EN ISO 45001, and it is available for public comments until 16 August 2026.

The main changes introduced in the ISO/DIS 45001 draft compared to ISO 45001:2018 include the following:

  1. Broader definition of health and safety – well-being: Greater emphasis is placed on employee well-being, rather than focusing solely on occupational health and safety. The DIS version explicitly expands the objective of the OH&S management system beyond the prevention of work-related injuries and occupational diseases to also support overall workplace well-being. This includes physical health, mental health, and employees’ social and cognitive needs. This represents one of the most significant conceptual changes.
  2. Stronger focus on psychosocial aspects: Psychosocial risks are given much greater prominence, with increased attention to stress, mental workload, violence and bullying, fatigue, and social isolation.
  3. Enhanced leadership and safety culture: Safety culture is introduced as one of the key requirements. Greater emphasis is placed on leadership and the top management’s ultimate responsibility for fostering a preventive culture and ensuring the consistent implementation of the OH&S management system documentation.
  4. Recognition of new ways of working: The draft addresses remote work, hybrid work arrangements, and the digitalization of work processes.
  5. Climate and organizational context: A broader perspective is introduced regarding climate change, external factors affecting occupational safety, and organizational resilience. Particular emphasis is placed on an organization’s ability to maintain operations during crises and adapt quickly to changing conditions, such as extreme weather events, supply shortages, and other disruptions.
  6. More detailed guidance in Annex A: Additional explanations of specific requirements and practical guidance for their implementation are provided in Annex A.
